Our Day with Words and Pictures

I love the fusion of different artistic genres coming together.  I believe that when you blur the boundaries between writing and image making, that’s when true creativity starts.  So when photographer Sarah Loveland and I decided to run a joint workshop, we set out to run a fun informal day where people would be inspired and surprise themeselves with their inner creativity!

Words and pictures workshop 1

Words & Pictures 2No previous experience was needed in either writing or photography and no fancy equipment needed – just cameraphones.

We spent the morning around the lovely market town of Hexham, wandering the the ancient passageway at the back of the Abbey, taking time to peruse the ancient gravestones and archways, then into Sele Park, ablaze with Autumnal colours.  Guided by Sarah, there was much to photograph, lots of close-up textures of the Abbey stonework, the park bandstand, more distance shots.

Back at Sarah’s fab new studio on Battle Hill, we perused the printed photos after lunch and set about using them to inspire words, phrases and flash fiction which each person put together in their own book.  I was able to draw from my own recent experience in exhibitions of using words and images and share this with the group.  Everyone produced some fabulous work, each with their own interpretation.

After very favourable feedback from everyone, Sarah and I will be repeating this workshop
